kamal Kadai work tutorial

I have given a brief explanation on basics of kamal kadai work in previous post. Now let us move on to the tutorial part…

DSCN4809

Step 1 : Trace the pattern to the fabric. The pattern has a step like structure, this is the peculiarity of kamal work. Here in this pattern there are 3 levels for the petal , you can add or less the levels as you wish.

Step 2 : Make 6 straight stitches by joining  points at the bottom of the petal(make these bottom points little close), and the outer edge (the edges which I have numbered) of each step. The straight stitches made to the points (1 , 6), (2 ,5), and (3 ,4 ) should be of same length. This is the basement stitch of kamal kadai work. Don’t make the stitches too tight or too loose.

Step 3 : The technique of kamal kadai work is simple needle weaving technique. After making the straight stitches, take the needle out through a point at the bottom right or left corner of the petal. Then without pricking the fabric, pass the needle above the first thread, then below the second thread, again above the third, below the fourth like that.

Step 4 : Turn around the needle and repeat the Step 3 process.

Step 5 : Repeat Step 3 and 4 till the first level, that is the (1,6) pair gets filled. Now only four straight stitches that is (2,5) and (3,4) are involved in the weaving.

Step 6 : Fill (2,5), then weave (3,4), after finishing (3,4) that is the upper level insert the needle and fasten the thread.

Step 7 : Finish all the petals by repeating the above steps.

Keep in mind :

  • Make sure that the thread is long enough to complete one petal.
  • Don’t make the thread too tight or too loose.
  • Prick the fabric at the starting and finishing points only. Do not prick in between the straight stitches.

Hope you got an idea of kamal kadai work.

I value your words, please don’t go without telling a word…..
